When it comes to protecting your home or business from earthquakes, you can never be too prepared. That’s why, when our client in Van Nuys came to us looking for a way to seismically retrofit their building, we knew we could help.
The building in question was a two-story wood frame structure with tuck-under parking. This type of construction is especially vulnerable to earthquakes, and our client wanted to make sure their building was as safe as possible.
We recommended retrofitting the building with moment frame bracing or a moment-resisting steel frame. This would provide extra support and stability in the event of an earthquake.
Installing the retrofit was not without its challenges. Because the building was occupied, we had to take special care to minimize disruption to the tenants. We also had to work around the tuck-under parking, which made access to the upper floors more difficult.
Despite these challenges, we were able to successfully install the retrofit and our client was very pleased with the results. The building is now much better protected against earthquakes and our client can rest easy knowing their tenants are safe.
