Cantilevered Column Retrofitting in Van Nuys, CA

When it comes to retrofitting, there is no one-size-fits-all solution – each building is unique and therefore requires a tailored approach. This was the case for our recent project at 7350 Kester Ave in Van Nuys, CA. The building, a wood frame condo complex with tuck-under parking, is 2-stories and 9-15 units. It was built under building code standards enacted before January 1, 1978, making it seismically vulnerable.

After a thorough assessment of the property, we recommended cantilevered steel columns as the best retrofit solution. This method involves attaching columns to the outside of the building, which provides additional support and increases its resistance to seismic activity.

The installation process was not without challenges – due to the location of the parking garage, we had to be careful not to damage the structure or disrupt the tenants. We also had to work around the busy schedules of the tenants to minimize the impact of construction on their daily lives.

Despite these challenges, we were able to successfully install the cantilevered columns and retrofit the building to current seismic standards. The client was very pleased with the results and appreciated our efforts to minimize the disruption to their tenants.

If you have an older building that is in need of retrofitting, we highly recommend cantilevered columns. This solution is effective, efficient, and minimally disruptive. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you seismically retrofit your property.
