We were recently contracted by a client to seismically retrofit a building on Poinsettia Pl. in Los Angeles. The building is a 3-story structure with tuck-under parking and cantilevered steel columns – two seismic vulnerabilities that can pose a serious threat in the event of an earthquake. To solve this problem, we installed moment frames and braced or moment-resisting steel frames throughout the building. This will provide the necessary support to keep the building from collapsing in an earthquake.
The Retrofit1 team faced several challenges while working on this project. First, we had to coordinate with the tenants of the building to make sure that they were aware of the construction work that was taking place and that their daily routines would not be disrupted. Second, we had to work around the existing steel columns in the building without compromising the structural integrity of the retrofit.
